The Amesbury Police Department's Crime Scene Unit is currently comprised of three sworn officers, Sgt. Albert Chatigny, Sgt Jeffrey Worthen and Off. Larry Bybee. All have been trained extensively in various areas of crime scene investigation including processing, collection and documentation of evidence. Other areas of expertise include crime scene reconstruction, latent print examination, collection of tire tread and shoe impressions, blood stain pattern interpretation and how to obtain DNA samples from suspects, victims, and crime scenes. All three officers are certified by the International Association of Identification as Crime Scene Investigators.

Unlike the Hollywood version of CSI, real crime scene investigation is often tedious work. Crime scene investigators are just a part of the team. This consists of patrol officers who usually come upon the scene initially, secure the scene, handle any suspects and or victims present, then call for the services of the C.S.U. and detectives. A proper crime scene investigation requires that all the officers involved in the investigation work in unison to assist the victims, identify suspects, locate, document and collect evidence and ultimately present the case in court.
