Child Seat Safety Services

8 out of 10 seats are not installed properly. Have yours checked and installed correctly by a certified child passenger safety technician.

Welcome to the child passenger safety page of the Amesbury Police Department web site. For the past several years, The Amesbury Police Department has been involved in promoting child passenger safety. The program began in 2003 and since that time, hundreds of child safety seats have been checked and installed. This project, along with the W.H.A.L.E.™ Program (We Have A Little Emergency) - Child Safety Seat Occupant Identification Program, have provided a safer ride for children and peace of mind for parents in Amesbury and surrounding communities.

Child Passenger Safety Checkpoints are conducted frequently at the Amesbury Police Department. The process involves inspection and installation of the child safety seat; it takes approximately 30 minutes and is free of charge. Parents also receive instructions in properly securing the child in the safety seat.

If you are interested in having your child’s safety seat inspected and installed, please contact me at the police station. Checkpoint dates and times are available on my voicemail and by clicking on the master calendar link at the top of this page. Parents who are expecting a child are urged to have the seat installed 4-6 weeks prior to the date of delivery.

If you have questions regarding child passenger safety, please call the police station (978-388-1212) and leave me a voicemail message. Or, if you prefer, you can send email to: davidc@amesburyma.gov . Also, more information can be found on the web: CarSeatData.org - user ratings of car seats fitting into cars  and at: Child Passenger Safety - Executive Office of Public Safety

The Massachusetts Child Passenger Safety Law

As of July 10, 2008 the law requires all children riding as passengers in motor vehicles to be in federally-approved child passenger restraints that are properly fastened and secured until they are 8 years old OR over 57” tall.

The expanded law requires a booster seat/safety belt combination for children who have outgrown a child safety seat – typically when they are above age 5 or 40 pounds – until they are 8 years old OR over 57” tall

The Massachusetts Safety Belt Law requires safety belt use by those 13 years of age and older.
